Coffee & Chat Patrice Lewis

What’s your favorite coffee/tea?

I loathe coffee with every fiber of my being (apparently it’s due to a genetically predisposed sensitivity to 6-n-propylthiouracil, which is also why I don’t care for chocolate). Tea, however, is another kettle of fish. I love a good hearty cup of Darjeeling. I’m drinking some now, as I write this.

Oh, wow! I wish I didn’t care for chocolate. Not only do I eat too much of it, but it gives me awful heartburn, which you would think keep me away from it. What are you currently reading?

I’m on an English history bender at the moment. I just finished reading a biography of Margaret Beaufort, followed by an historical examination of the Princes in the Tower. At the moment I’m tackling a biography of Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Nice, I love English history. Well, I love all eras of history. I’ll definitely have to check into these topics. What are your thoughts on what you’re reading?

I’ve always loved English Medieval and Renaissance history, which is hilarious since I don’t have a drop of English blood in me. But the clashes of ego during these times and how the struggles for power impacted the ordinary peasant is both fascinating and infuriating.

I agree, those eras are fascinating. I wrote some of my first dabblings during the Medieval and Renaissance. I found the Crusades interesting and wrote some blogs on The Art of Courtly Love. Who’s your all-time fictional character and why?

I discovered the author Anya Seton in high school, and her depiction of Katherine Swynford, third wife of John of Gaunt, still captivates me. While Katherine was a real person, Seton’s book (simply entitled “Katherine”) is highly fictionalized.

I have heard of “Katherine” but have never read it. Now, I’m curious. Do you have a “the book was better than the movie”? If so, which one and why?

I love the book “The Far Pavilions” by M.M. Kaye, an epic novel depicting the love story between Ashton and Anjuli set against the backdrop of 19th-century British India. To be honest I skim through most of the military clashes, but the love story itself is incomparable. They made a TV mini-series on this book in 1984, and it’s simply awful. It doesn’t even begin to capture the nuances of the story as I built them in my mind. I saw one episode and simply could not watch the rest. Books rule!

Patrice, thank you for joining us. I have discovered some fascinating stories I’m eager to read, and I’ve added them to my “To Be Read” list, as well as your latest release. For more information about Patrice Lewis, you can go visit her website, here.

The Amish Midwife’s bargain Backcover

An accident on a stormy night will change the course of their lives…

Grieving after the loss of a patient, midwife Miriam Kemp returns to her Amish roots and vows to leave her nursing life behind. But when she accidentally hits Aaron Lapp on a rain-drenched road, she offers to help the scarred and handsome—if somewhat cranky—bachelor while he recovers.

Could this arrangement allow them to heal…while finding a love they never expected?

This definitely sounds like a must read.
